Lessons in Urban Planning in Ancient Greece


Monemvasia, Greece. A lesson in urban design, Monemvasia is a medieval fortress town on a small island 200 m from the SE coast of Greece. The town and fortress were founded by the Byzantines in the 6th century making it the oldest continuously inhabited castle town in Europe. With its churches, castle walls, low arches, vaulted passages, and winding cobbled alleys it has enormous historical, architectural, and cultural significance.
